what are you supposed to figure out? what kind of character the devil is?

Based on this excerpt from "How Much Land Does a Man Need?" by Leo Tolstoy, how is the author using the character of the Devil? "Of course our work is rough and coarse. But, on the other hand, it is sure; and we need not bow to any one. But you, in your towns, are surrounded by temptations; to-day all may be right, but to-morrow the Evil One may tempt your husband with cards, wine, or women, and all will go to ruin. Don't such things happen often enough?" Pahom, the master of the house, was lying on the top of the oven, and he listened to the women's chatter. "It is perfectly true," thought he. "Busy as we are from childhood tilling mother earth, we peasants have no time to let any nonsense settle in our heads. Our only trouble is that we haven't land enough. If I had plenty of land, I shouldn't fear the Devil himself!" The women finished their tea, chatted a while about dress, and then cleared away the tea-things and lay down to sleep. But the Devil had been sitting behind the oven, and had heard all that was said. He was pleased that the peasant's wife had led her husband into boasting, and that he had said that if he had plenty of land he would not fear the Devil himself. "All right," thought the Devil. "We will have a tussle. I'll give you land enough; and by means of that land I will get you into my power." as a foil as an antagonist as a dynamic character as the protagonist @cecormier

It sounds to me like The Devil will be the antagonist. He certainly doesn't sound like the good guy in the story. He's doesn't seem to be there to contrast someone else's personality. And he doesn't sound like he's about to go through a lot of inner change. He does sound like he's going to be messing with some people though. Therefore he's the Antagonist.

Read this excerpt from David Copperfield by Charles wingspanens: Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show. To begin my life with the beginning of my life, I record that I was born (as I have been informed and believe) on a Friday, at twelve o'clock at night. It was remarked that the clock began to strike, and I began to cry, simultaneously. In consideration of the day and hour of my birth, it was declared by the nurse, and by some sage women in the neighbourhood who had taken a lively interest in me several months before there was any possibility of our becoming personally acquainted, first, that I was destined to be unlucky in life; and secondly, that I was privileged to see ghosts and spirits; both these gifts inevitably attaching, as they believed, to all unlucky infants of either gender, born towards the small hours on a Friday night. In which stage of plot development is the excerpt most likely to occur? exposition climax falling action resolution @cecormier

It sounds like the character is introducing themselves, and setting the stage for a story. That only happens in the exposition, or beginning of the story. I would defiantly have to go with A then.
