OpenStudy (anonymous):

fellow kentuckian!

OpenStudy (liciagrl911):

Go Wildcats!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right on! lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first, make the fractions improper

OpenStudy (liciagrl911):

How do I do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

theyd be 17/14 and -13/7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for 1 3/14, you would multiply 1 x 14 and then add it to the numerator (3)

OpenStudy (liciagrl911):

Add what to the numerator?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 1x 14 = 14. add 14 to the numerator which is 3. then put that number over the denominator which is 14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then for the second one, 7*-2+1 over the denominator, 7

OpenStudy (liciagrl911):

Okay so 3/4 and the second one is -13/7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so your problem is now 17/14 -(-13/7). but before you solve for a common denominator, you can cross the negatives to make it 17/4 + 13/7

OpenStudy (liciagrl911):

That would make it 4/3 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since 7 goes into 14, 14 is your common denominator. do 13*2 and 7*2 for equality purposes. so now, it would be 17/14+26/14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@liciagrl911 no bc its already simplified

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so add those together to get : _____

OpenStudy (liciagrl911):

43/14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good. now can you simplify that? does anything go into 14 as well as 43?

OpenStudy (liciagrl911):

I don't know :( a nd how do I turn it into a proper fraction?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how many times does 14 go into 43?

OpenStudy (liciagrl911):

0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha no, it goes in 3 times. 14 x 3 = 42 . you have 1 left over... so the answer is 3 1/14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

booyah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nailed it

OpenStudy (liciagrl911):

LOL thank you. Sorry if this took too long I'm not all the way there today.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dont be! i had fun

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's okay! Glad to help :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea me too!

OpenStudy (liciagrl911):

Thank you :) I can't give medals to both of you though :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we already gave each other one lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

#teamwork

OpenStudy (liciagrl911):

Okay lol :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just cuz were cool like that

OpenStudy (liciagrl911):
