How do the cells of the immune system respond to pathogens?

OpenStudy (inexilewetrust):

What happens when you get sick?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You get a fever.

OpenStudy (inexilewetrust):

Okay, how does the immune system respond to it? Do they leave the foreign virus wondering about in the body?

OpenStudy (inexilewetrust):

Why would you get a flu shot?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well I know when you get a fever your body temperature rises and it can kill the other bacteria to fit diseases? I dunno :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We get the flu shot to prevent getting sick haha.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

fight not fit*

OpenStudy (inexilewetrust):

Okay, when foreign viruses and bacteria enter the body, the immune system reacts to it. White blood cells attack and fight off the bacteria. The purpose of the flu shot is to inject dead viruses from the flu into the body. The immune system attacks it. Next time a flu virus like the one they injected in your body enter, the immune system knows and recognizes the virus to attack it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay! So is pathogens a bacteria?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no that works different ways

OpenStudy (inexilewetrust):

Pathogens are bacteria, viruses, and disease that enter the body.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know that was just a suggestion.

OpenStudy (inexilewetrust):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha thanks anyway @SkaterBoyShawn :)

OpenStudy (inexilewetrust):

The flu is something we all had at one point. She could relate to it. Not everyone has ebola. @SkaterBoyShawn I understand. I was just explaining why I chose the flu. Thanks for your help anyways!
