Which of the following populations exhibit an exponential type of growth?

OpenStudy (shadeyghost):

what are the following?

OpenStudy (zairahernandez):

B) a fruit fly population that recently arrived on a lush mid-oceanic island previously inhabited only by plants ?????

OpenStudy (zairahernandez):

The correct answer is neither: - Homo sapiens have seen population growth faster than exponential. (Exponential means constant doubling time. Human population has seen doubling time fall) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_popu... - Many predator species have cyclic populations: when their prey is plentiful, they have many offspring; the rise in predator population brings down the prey population; and so many of the predators starve. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotka%E2%80... etc. Exponential growth is a very simple model. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exponential... But no population can grow exponentially forever - that would require infinite resources. So the logistic model was devised - just a little more complex and it prevents infinite growth: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logistic_function#In_ecology:_modeling_population_growth But just because it is not as inaccurate doesn't make it right, just better.
