all forces are acting in equal and opposite directions so its all balanced.

Car will accelerate in the direction of the net force, no force in the vertical direction, so find the direction of the net force in the horizontal direction!

Net force can be thought of as the sum of all the forces. Forces pointing to the right can be referred to as positive forces while forces directed to the left are negative. Up is positive and down is negative. Just add the opposing forces together to see what the result is. The "leftover" force is the net force.
