It meant an end to political unity. After the fall of the western Roman Empire, Europe was initially divided into successor barbarian kingdoms--the anglo-saxons in Britain, the Franks in much of Gaul, the burgundians in eastern Gaul, the visigoths in Spain and after 493 the ostrogoths in Italy. In many ways civilization regressed; roads and buildings were neglected, cities were abandoned or greatly shrank, trade was reduced and literacy rates fell. Although the late roman world was already quasi-feudal, the fall of the western empire eventually meant more of it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To an extent you can say that it shaped the course of European culture. The Holy Roman Empire that was initiated by the Carolingians constantly tried to emulate the Roman values that had been lost, as did the Byzantine Empire (which was the result of the Eastern Roman Empire - they still called themselves 'Roman', albeit in Greek). You can also say that it allowed tribes and warbands to develop into major powers. Certainly, the fall of Rome shaped Europe for a few hundred years. If, however, you want to know the main factor in the emergence European powers towards to Millenium, I would point towards the development of Christianity. It, for many leaders, legitimised their rules, and was the driving force in warfare between Christian powers and pagan ones. If Europeans looked back towards Rome, it increasingly was because they looked to Christ's life, not because of an affinity with Rome. Classical culture was revived during the Italian Renaissance, but the Middle Ages were decidedly Christian, not post-Roman. Source(s): 'Millenium' by Tom Holland. It's a thoroughly informative and well-written history of Europe from the fall of Rome to the 11th Century.
