when working with the median of negative numbers and the numbers are -12, -9, -14, -38, -49, -49, -18, -43 dont you put -49 first and -9 last?

OpenStudy (igreen):

You order from least to greatest.

OpenStudy (igreen):

The 'bigger' the negative numbers seem, the smaller they are.

OpenStudy (igreen):

So we have: -49, -49, -43, -38, -18, -14, -12, -9

OpenStudy (igreen):

The median is the middle number..so what are the two numbers in the middle?

@iGreen

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is it 29.1

OpenStudy (igreen):

Yep, now we find the mean of the two numbers. Add them up and divide by 2. \(\sf \dfrac{-39 + -18}{2}=~ \! ?\)

OpenStudy (igreen):

I got something different.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what did you get @iGreen

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@iGreen ????

OpenStudy (amistre64):

they showed the calculation, what do you get from their guidance? what is: -39+-18 , divided by 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-48????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[-23 sorry\]

OpenStudy (amistre64):

you were closer the first time. the average of 2 numbers will be a value between them ... 48 is simply not between 18 and 39

OpenStudy (amistre64):

39 +18
