the |x+4| part basically means "If x+4 is positive, do nothing, but if x+4 is negative, make it positive" Which causes the line to 'bounce' on the horizontal axis at x=-4 (because -4+4 = 0 which is the border between positive and negative values of the equation x+4. The colored part of the graph is the area where |x+4| is bigger or equal to x. To the right of x=-4 it's always exactly a difference of 4, to the left it becomes increasingly large as x grows negative while |x+4| becomes a larger positive
