OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

What is the "no pass, no play" rule and why is it controversial?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Have you done any research on what it is? :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

o pass no play rule is a state law requiring public school students who participate in extracurricular activities to maintain a minimum grade-point average.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

NO. My textbook is so unreasonable and hard to understand! It's almost like it's in a different language, but it's not. I get so mad when I don't know what it's saying, and then I feel stupid because of that, and then I get even more mad! But then I started taking therapy, and now I'm back to normal! I just need to know what it is, and I think I can handle the rest on my own.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

basically you have to maintain all your grades to have an c or higher to play a sport (game)

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Oh. I think I got it.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Here is why they think it is controvertial, and are filing cases in court over it: "The plaintiffs in the renewed legal battle maintain that the rule penalizes minorities, who have higher course-failure rates than nonminorities. Judge Anthony certified the suit as a class action last month. Although none of the plaintiffs are minority members, or the parents of minority or handicapped students, they also charge that the regulation is discriminatory because it singles out students in special-education classes for exemption." ~ http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/1985/12/04/06120036.h05.html

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

controversial*

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Wow. That was deep. Well thanks.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

And here is more in depth about the law itself: "The No Pass No Play rule stipulates that Texas public school students who participate in extracurricular activities must achieve a passing grade (70% or higher, 60% or higher for Pre-AP or AP courses) each six-week grading period in order to qualify to continue participating in extracurricular activities such as athletics, band, and orchestra. If students receive at least one failing grade on their report card during a given six-week grading period, that student is forbidden or ineligible to participate in extracurricular activities until the failing grade or grades have been improved to passing levels." ~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Pass_No_Play
