This is a bit late but, natural selection and artificial selection are the similar because both involve some sort of selection. Nature "selects" the most able and adapted animals to survive to their environment and artificial selection breeds animals for similar purposes. What's different is that artificial selection is basically breeding desired qualities in non-natural ways while natural selection follows random genetic mutations that sometimes benefit the animal.

OpenStudy (javk):

`Natural Selection` - there must be diversity within a population - variation must directly impact individuals' ability to survive - traits must be genetically heritable - the difference in reproductive success based on a particular trait is driven by natural processes like predators, weather conditions, and environmental constraints - it is purely situational, it is simply "cause and effect" in action `Artificial Selection` - imposed by humans on other organisms - people apply selective pressure by choosing to modify particular trait to achieve a purpose - involves will and intent - artificially selected traits do not necessarily improve fitness ` http://science.opposingviews.com/compare-contrast-artificial-natural-selection-5127.html `

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Natural selection and artificial selection both involve an organism's traits being determined by how much they're favored. Then, the organisms with favorable traits pass those traits on to future generations. However, natural selection is caused by survival; the organisms with traits that increase their chances for survival and reproduction pass on their traits. As for artificial selection, humans purposefully decide which traits (like the most colourful one) of an organism to pass on.
