OpenStudy (anonymous):

find x in the triangle??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know that the area is 12.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you set it up for me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my bad, it's just a pythagorean theorem problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[ (6m)^2+(4m)^2 = x^2 \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for some reason i don't think i'm doing this correctly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a^2+b+2=c^2 in right triangles where a, b are the legs and c is the hypotenuse

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but with m in the equation im not understanding ho to solve it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm pretty sure the m just means meters

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if not, then treat it as you would anything \((6m)^2+(4m)^2=x^2\\x=\sqrt{(6m)^2+(4m)^2}\) also if it isn't meters, than your answer to area should have an m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh so i can take the m out and solve.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 52 m^2 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, and since \(x=\sqrt{52m^2}=\sqrt{52}\sqrt{m^2}\), you can simplify it like that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but it could also remain as 52m^2 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's kinda pointless given that we have to simplify the radical

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry im confused then

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you help me simplify it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just do it without the m's, you get the same answer. \(6^2+4^2=x^2\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah that would still give me 52m^2 then. after that what am i supposed to do with it to simplify?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how? there are no m's there, where are you getting m's from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i thought i just add it on ? okay so 52^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wut

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\(x^2=6^2+4^2\\x^2=36+16\\\x^2=52\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you said it needed to be simplified further. is 52^2 my answer? that's what i've been asking.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tkae the square root of both sides to solve for x. 52^2 makes absolutely no sense. show your work so I can understand where you're getting the number from

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x is an unknown, you can't just replace it with a number. we're solving for x, remember? 36+16=x^2 to solve for x take the square root of both sides.

what do mean? |dw:1429401306637:dw|
