The Columbian Exchange or Grand Exchange was the widespread transfer of animals, plants, culture, human populations, communicable diseases, technology and ideas between the American and Afro-Eurasian hemispheres in the 15th and 16th centuries, related to European colonization and trade (including African/American slave trade) after Christopher Columbus' 1492 voyage. When explorers and colonists from Europe came to the Americas, they discovered amazing food plants and immediately sent samples back to Europe where these new foods became very popular. Corn, potatoes, squash, tomatoes, peanuts, and tobacco all traveled from the Americas to the rest of the world. However, on the other side of the exchange, Europeans and Africans did bring some very important food crops to the Americas including wheat, rice, bananas, sugar, and grapes. Europeans also brought many kinds of domesticated animals, which quickly were adopted by the native peoples of the Americas. These animals included goats, chickens, pigs, sheep, and cattle. They also brought insects, including honeybees and earthworms. @Denyaqueen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbian_Exchange
