Use the terms Natural Selection,Adaption, and selective advantage o explaibn why their so many varities of finches. Why are there varities that eat diffrent things?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

hmm, the only thing i got to contribute is to ask you for your attempt.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i dont know what selective advantage means so i cant really determine its usage ... might need some definitions of the others as well to be certain.

OpenStudy (baby456):

ok The variaties of finches caused man finches to come about. Adaption many beaks have changed so they could eat better. iSelective advantage lets the animal reproduce more of its kind since it has food.

OpenStudy (baby456):

natural selction caused many varities of finches and their beaks

OpenStudy (baby456):

thats all i got

OpenStudy (amistre64):

jsut watched a 15 minute video on finch beaks and i still got nothing :/

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its prolly not good that you simply mention the phrase and tack on it that they caused a variety of beaks in finches. you are being assessed as to how well you understand the concepts and not really how well you can repeat the phrases.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

other than that, i got nothing ...

Help @matt101

OpenStudy (matt101):

The basic story with Darwin's finches is this: A long time ago there was one population of one species of finch that lived on an island. After a period of time, some of these finches, for one reason or another, moved to nearby islands. The problem was that the main food source on these islands was different from the main food source on the original island. This meant that some finches, due to small differences in the physical shape and size of their beaks, were better able to survive on these islands because their beaks made eating the new types of food easier. At the same time, finches whose beaks didn't work as well for eating these new food sources were at a disadvantage, and so produced less offspring or died off themselves because of their trouble getting enough food. Over a very long period of time, the population of finches on each island diverged evolutionarily on the basis of beak morphology, until each island became home to a different species of finch, with each species having a beak best-suited for the food source on their island. Now for a couple definitions: NATURAL SELECTION is the gradual process by which heritable biological traits become either more or less common in a population depending on how these traits influence an organism's reproductive success in a given environment. ADAPTATION in the context of evolution is the process by which an organism becomes better-suited to its environment via natural selection, and is usually a result of a specific trait allowing that organism to exploit their environment better. SELECTIVE ADVANTAGE is a similar idea to adaptation, except rather than the process of becoming better-suited to an environment, it refers to the actual trait (which gives a "selective advantage") of an organism that enables it to survive and reproduce better than other organisms in a population in a given environment. I tried to avoid using these three terms in the paragraph I wrote about the finches. You should be able to work them into the story of the finches and rewrite it in your own words to answer your question!
