If a square that measures 11 feet on a side it attached to a rectangle that measures 9 feet by 11 feet, what is the total area of the attached shaped?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@TheSmartOne can u help me please?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Find the area of the square, and ad it to the area of the rectangle. \(\sf\Large Area~ of ~a ~square = side^2\) \(\sf\Large Area~ of~ a~ rectangle =~= Length \times width\)

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

add it to the*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the are 40?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

umm not even close \(\sf 9^2 + 9 \times 11=?\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

180

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how what about the area of the rectangle?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

that was the \(\sf 9\times11\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so what would I do next?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

That is all. You found the area of the square which is \(\sf 9^2\) And the area of the rectangle which is \(\sf 9\times11\) And then you added them together and got 180. c:

220 square feet would be the answer in my answer book.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9*11+11*11=220

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

oops, I accidentally switched the numbers. 11 is the side of the square. So it would ne \(\sf 11^2 + 9\times 11\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its okay! thanks @TheSmartOne and @robtobey

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

(:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

11^2 = 121, 9 * 11 = 99, 121 + 99 = 220
