TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

What is sin in terms of the sides? Is it opposite side/ hypotenuse adjacent side/hypotenuse opposite side/ adjacent side

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

And similarly what is it for cos?

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

Use the pythagorean theorem to get your hypotenuse Your 2 legs are the lengths of 12 and 5 12^2+5^2=c^2 solve for C Then just remember that sin=opp/hyp and that cos=adj/hyp

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay so would C be: 169?

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

Right, now take the square root of that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

13?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the hypotenuse would be: sqrt 13 correct or wrong?

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

Just 13, not the sqrt of 13

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay. so Sin x = 5/13 Cos y = 5/13 they are both the same?

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

Yes, corrrect :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would i explain the relationship between the ratios though? i know that they are the same but that's about how much i can put into words lol.

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

Well, saying that they are the same sounds perfectly fine. Just write that the sin and cos of the opposing angles are identical.

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

As the adjacent side of angle Y is the same as the opposite side of angle x

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

all good?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sounds good thank you!!

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

yw :)
