Describe the modes of vibration of standing waves on strings and in open-air collumns

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

and am also trying to explain the vibration of standing waves in closed air colllumns

OpenStudy (jadzia):

so basically you have to describe the behaviour of standing waves in strings, open air columns and closed ones... In a string: http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/waves/string.html In Open Air column: http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/waves/opecol.html In closed Air column: http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/waves/clocol.html

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

Well this is what I wrote for standing waves on string: Standing waves are two of the same waves traveling in opposite directions on the same string. Because the waves are traveling in opposite directions, the string particles appear to move up and down as expected to be, but the wave does not appear to progate either to the right or left. A standing wave will appear as a perfect sine wave that stays in the same position ocillating up and down. It will appear to be standing still.
