Why are the farms in the western part of the Midwest larger? The land is cheap to buy. The crops need more space. It takes more land to make a living. It is easier to farm more land.

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

@justuu The western portion of the Midwest is primarily composed of tall grasses, with forests being confined to riverbanks. The carrying capacity of the land also decreases in the west, as farms become larger and settlements more dispersed http://www.geog.nau.edu/courses/alew/gsp220/text/chapters/ch7.html

The Midwest region is located in the upper- middle part of the United States. There are 12 states in the Midwest including: North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. In the Midwest there are farms, factories, and cities. The Great Lakes and the Mississippi River are also located in the Midwest. Geography Four of the five Great Lakes are in the Midwest. They are Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie. Early settlers called them the “Great Lakes” because they are so large. Lake Superior, the biggest of the Great Lakes, is the largest freshwater lake in the world. These lakes are important to the Midwest for a variety of reasons. They are used as a transportation corridor-ships large and small transport (carry) goods on the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes are also an important recreational resource. Many people visit the Great Lakes to swim, fish, boat and enjoy the scenic beauty. Much of the Midwest is flat. The flattest part of the Midwest is called the Great Plains. These plans stretch from the Mississippi River west to the Rocky Mountains. The Plains were was covered with tall grass and were home to many animals such as the buffalo. Today, large farms cover the Great Plains and it is known as America’s Farm Belt. Farmers grow corn and wheat in the rich soil. The plains are still home to many different kinds of animals and birds. Many different kinds of birds migrate across the Great Plains in the spring and fall. History Long ago, herds of buffalo lived on the Great Plains. Native Americans hunted the buffalo. They ate buffalo meat and used the buffalo hides to make clothes. They also used the skins to make homes called tepees. In the 1800’s, thousands of people moved to the Great Plains. These people were called pioneers. They came from the East to farm the Great Plains. There were not that many trees on the Great Plains so the pioneers built their houses out of blocks of sod (grass with roots and top soil). Grass and flowers grew out of sod houses. Economy The “Farm Belt” is located in the Midwest. The soil here is very fertile (rich in nutrients and good for growing crops). There are many farms and farmers. The Farm Belt has three main parts: - The Wheat Belt grows lots of wheat; - The Corn Belt grows lots of corn; - The Dairy Belt makes lots of milk, butter and cheese. Many other types of crops are grown in the Farm Belt and they are shipped throughout the United States and other parts of the world where they help feed many people. Another part of the Midwest is known as the Manufacturing Belt. Manufacturing is the making of products for sale. Many people in the Midwest are employed in factories where they make steel, cars and many other goods. Some cities are known for what they make. Detroit, for example, is called the “Motor City” because it is a well-known center for the manufacture of automobiles. Chicago, Cleveland, Milwaukee, and St. Louis are also large manufacturing centers. Culture The Midwest has large cities like Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis and Cleveland. It also has small towns and farms. In the cities, people work in banks, stores, offices and factories. In small towns many people have jobs that help farmers in various ways such as selling farm equipment and supplies, fixing machines and providing other services. Farming is very important to the culture of the Midwest. Every summer and fall county fairs are held throughout the Midwest region. These fairs have rides and games. They have displays and competitions, too. These fairs help the people of the Midwest celebrate the hard work for which the region is known.
