Today, Genghis Khan is remembered for being a very brutal leader. It is true that he killed millions of people during his conquests. He gave no mercy to those who resisted his power. Laws under Genghis Khan were very strict. However, he also did some very positive things during his reign. He once said, ‎"Heaven grew weary of the excessive pride and luxury of China....I am from the Barbaric North. I wear the same clothing and eat the same food as the cowherds and horse-herders. We make the same sacrifices and we share our riches. I look upon the nation as a new-born child and I care for my soldiers as though they were my brothers." As ruler of the Mongol Empire, he did many things to help his soldiers and the peasants. He gave high-ranking positions to his loyal followers rather than to wealthy people or his own family. Many of these followers were from very low-ranking clans. In the past, people believed that Genghis Khan did not know how to read. Today, we know that he could read and was very well educated. He encouraged learning throughout the Mongol Empire. He allowed his subjects to practice whichever religion they chose. Previous rulers had not done this. He made it a crime to steal other people's property. He outlawed the selling of women as slaves. He even protected animals by outlawing hunting during breeding season. Genghis Khan divided the Mongol Empire into four sections, called Khanates. Each of these he gave to a son or grandson, who would rule that Khanate after his death. This division made it easier to manage such a large empire. However, struggles between the rulers of these Khanates would later cause the Empire to fall apart. from this i concluded A more
