Which word best describes the imagery in the first stanza of "The River Merchant's Wife: A Letter"? mournful violent solemn playful Poem - http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/177163

sammixboo (sammixboo):

Tell me which ones you think is it, or isn't it first of all

sammixboo (sammixboo):

Is it mournful? (feeling of sadness) Is it violent? Is it solemn? (serious) Is it playful?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's not violent. I know that. I thought it was playful, but it doesn't seem as playful towards the end of the first stanza.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's not solemn either.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is the first stanza right? While my hair was still cut straight across my forehead I played about the front gate, pulling flowers. You came by on bamboo stilts, playing horse, You walked about my seat, playing with blue plums. And we went on living in the village of Chōkan: Two small people, without dislike or suspicion. At fourteen I married My Lord you. I never laughed, being bashful. Lowering my head, I looked at the wall. Called to, a thousand times, I never looked back.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The first part sounds playful, but the second part sounds kind of mournful.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do u think?

hero (hero):

I know the answer to the question. Hint: Your posting of the first stanza is too long. The first stanza actually ends with the line: Two Small People.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Playful?

hero (hero):

Correct.
