Lets label the shirts A,B,C There are 3 shirts you can assign to Dave. A,B or C After Dave gets a shirt there are 2 shirts left to assign Kurt. After Kurt gets a shirt there is 1 shirt left to assign Chris. THis makes a total of 3x2x1 ways to assign shirts.
