A company offered one half of its employees a bonus if the production of light bulbs increased by 20%. The other half of the employees was not offered a bonus. As the end of the month, production in the group that did not get the bonus offer increased by a mean of 15 and production in the bonus group increased by a mean of 10. What is the correct order of steps to determine if the results are significant?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A: Randomly separate the employees’ individual results into two groups. B: Calculate the mean of each group. C: Calculate the difference of the means. D: Run the experiment many times. E: Calculate the probability of a difference of 5.

@welshfella

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm pretty sure D would be last. Repetition is usually the last step in any sort of experiment.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Honestly, ABCD sounds right to me... but not sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I was thinking ABCED

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

The experiment is done already. Forget "A". The mean increases are already calculated. Forget "B". Okay, we could do that. 10 - 15 = -5. That's done. Don't pick "C". Running this experiment multiple times is too expensive. We need results in time to make a difference in production for the next light bulb season. I would avoid "D". You WILL need a P-Value.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Talk it out. Think about it. Have a conversation with the facts that are in your head.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So would ABCED be the correct order of steps?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait thats not even an option

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

If you do "D" AT ALL, then "C" and "E" are inconsistent. Why in the name of reason would you calculate a P(Difference of 5) if the difference you calculated in "C" was something other than 5?!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a.) A, B, C, D, E b.) D, E, A, B, C c.) C, E, A, B, D d.) A, B, D, C, E

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its not asking me to cancel any steps out, just put it in order

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Fundamentally, it is a poorly-written question. "D" just doesn't fit in with the other four. "D" CONTAINS the other four steps. If I HAD to pick one, I would pick "D" first. Run the following experiment multiple times: ---- Divide up the employees. ---- Calculate the means. ---- Calculate the difference of means. ---- Calculate the probability of a difference that big.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, I will let you know the correct answer at the end of the test

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The one with D first is not the answer. Doesn't tell me which is right.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Shampoo may have the answer: Lather, Rinse, Repeat. Maybe "D" should be last.
