How and why did American race relations change as a result of World War II? What allowed the Civil Rights Movement flourish in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s? What was the role of political or demographic shifts? What was the role of the Cold War? What was the role of concerns about America's international 'image'? Please help asap
People like Jackie Robinson came back from fighting WWII and then were told that they couldn't drink the water from the same water fountain as a white man, and on top of that they were not allowed to move into the suburbs, they were really angry. They were not going to let that fly. WWII gave them the argument, that if they were equal enough to fight and die for their country, they were equal enough to have integrated restrooms.
The Civil Rights movement was able to flourish in the 40's, 50's, and 60's due to WWII and the cold war, and to some extent the free love movement. But also the Korean war and the prelude to Vietnam helped that as well.
