Which of the following expressions represents "5 less than 3 times the number m"? A. 5 - 3m B. 3m - 5 C. 5m - 3 D. 3 - 5m

OpenStudy (phi):

one way to do this, is first use numbers. For example, what is 5 less than 8 ?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

remember, if there is "less than, it implies that it is being subtracted So ___ - 5. Then, 3 times the number m can be thought of as multiplication. As we explored in the last problem, they go next to each other. Based from these hints, what do you think the answer is? @jason73125

B

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

@phi 's method is also good. Kind of gives you a perspective to where things go, since the wording of these problems are what get people off track. saying "what is 8 less than 5?" is backwards, in a sense. and B is correct, nice work
