(Dont write the whole thing for me please. I need to do this assignment in history and i need some help with ideas and facts about it. Thank you!) 1. Many factors led to the end of communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and subsequently the end of the Cold War. Choose one of the topics below and in a brief essay, identify the person or event and explain the role that the person or event played in helping to end the Cold War. • Alexander Solzhenitsyn • Helsinki Accords • Pope John Paul II • Solidarity Trade Union • Ronal Reagan • Mikhail Gorbachev • Hungary
All good topics. I would write about Reagan. His gung ho approach to opposing the Soviets, willingness to build up the military helped push the Soviet Union toward bankrupcy and the realization that they couldn't outspend the US. Reagan was willing to listen to Gorbachev when G came to his senses about the Cold War. He also supported efforts in Hungary and Poland (Solidarity) that hastened the end of the Cold War. As you can see, they all tie together. The end didn't come until George HW Bush was president, but Reagan seems the best context to explain it all. Hope that helps.
Thank you for all your information so far! im going to see if i can get more info but thanks so much!

I would also second wwhitlock's suggestion with Reagan if only because he's was a really colorful character as President. One of the nicknames he was given was "Ronnie Raygun" because of how up-front he was in confronting the Soviets. But it was probably because he also sowed the seeds of the Space Defense Initiative or SDI which the press dubbed "Star Wars" because it sounded so sci-fi. It was supposed to be a missile defense system that could shoot down enemy ICBMs (Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles) from space or from the ground using a variety of deterrents from X-ray lasers to other missiles. It was the ultimate "missile shield". Of course, none of the science became reality, but at the time during the 80s, it captured many people's imaginations -- including the Soviets. Here's a good link with a lot of information about Reagan and his leadership in the Cold War: http://reagan.civiced.org/lessons/middle-school/presidential-leadership-cold-war And here's another one with some good material: http://www.history.com/topics/us-presidents/ronald-reagan Hope this helps your project!
