A five-number summary (min, Q1, median, Q3, max) for a set of data is (15, 20, 35, 50, 115). Which is the largest number listed below that is not an outlier? A. 82 B. 67 C. 100 D. 59 E. 115

OpenStudy (amistre64):

by convention, q1 to q3 define the range that excludes any outliers

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

@amistre64 i got 82 when using the formula, can you check my answer please?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

min, Q1, median, Q3, max 15 20 35 50 115 *---| | |---* this is our box plot anything over 50, or under 20 is by convention outlying as an educated guess, i would pick the value closest to 50

OpenStudy (amistre64):

what formula did you use?

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

i did Q3-Q1 and got 30 and then i did 1.5*30 and got 45.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

http://www.mathwords.com/o/outlier.htm this sounds like what your attempting

OpenStudy (amistre64):

30*1.5 = 45 50+45 is at most 95 82 is the largest number that is equal to or less than 95 so that seems plausible to me i never knew that 'rule' or formula

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

ok thanks!
