Which of the following is probably true about the data set below? A five-number summary (min, Q1, median, Q3, max) for a set of data is (15,20,35,50,115). A. The mean is larger than the median B. The median is larger than the mean C. The median and mean are most likely about the same D. The standard deviation of the data set is a five-number summary E. None of the above

OpenStudy (phi):

if the numbers are spread symmetrically about the median, then the mean and median are about the same. notice you have 15, 20, 35, 50, 115 (I'm trying to show the 115 is far away, compared to the 15 to 20 distance) if you find the average of numbers that includes one big number, the average goes up, but the median stays the same. example 1,2,3 (2 is the median) 1,2,100 (2 is still the median... the average will be bigger than the mean because of the big number .. the 100)

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

Oh ok so the mean goes up and the median stays the same? @phi
