The Preamble to the Constitution begins with the words “We the People.” This collective “we” did not extend to the right to vote for women, African Americans, or Native Americans. In 250–300 words, answer these questions: How has this omission affected Constitutional history in the United States? I am very confused on this question, could someone help?
@wwhitlock do you know?
We the People means all people. The question writer confuses that idea with We the Citizens. Full rights only extended to white males at the time because that was the social norm. There were powerful people who considered the ideas in the Declaration of Independence as applying to ALL people. When it came time to put together a Constitution, the need to compromise was a reality. So all the abstract ideas about freeing slaves, giving blacks, Indians and women full civil rights just wasn't going to happen. The truth is that the 13 states could not all agree on those things happening. So they took slavery and punted the ball down a few generations. The women and Indians got the same treatment. So, the question writer is looking for you to explain what happened to allow blacks, women and Indians to get full civil rights.
Glad to help. If you need help explaining any of those parts. Post again and tag me.
