Well there are many different reasons. after kennedy was assassinated and Johnson was sworn in, one of Johnson's first acts as president was to send 50,000 american soldiers to vietnam. before this the only involvement we ever had in vietnam was sending 2,000 officers to train the south vietnamese troops. But if you want the honest explanation you would have to go all the way back to the end of the second world war. Russia reached berlin before we did. When they got there they claimed all of the lands they had marched across to get to berlin and divided germany down the middle with the berlin wall. The eastern european countries they claimed would be dubbed"the iron curtain". After the war we saw the complete fall of colonization when every european colony in africa, central america and south america declared independence overnight. European countries had to spend so much revenue rebuilding the content after it was destroyed by the war that they had no time nor revenue to attend to those colonies. These new independent countries would have to make a choice on what type of government they would create. this sent most into a civil war over whether or not to be communist or democratic. the U.S. would secretly send troops and weapons to the democratic side while Russia would secretly send troops and weapons to the communist side. You've probably heard this being referred to as the cold war. in the 1950's vietnam declared its independence from france and after the war was over a civil war broke out between north and south vietnam. Ho Chi Minh wanted to establish a totalitarian communist government and those in the south opposed him. The U.S. had just ended the korean war which was fought for almost the same reason and did not want to go to war to defend south vietnam's democracy. as much as he despised communism President dwight D. eisenhower decided not to get involved in the war. twelve years later Johnson sent 50,000 troops to vietnam to fight the north vietnamese. So there you have it. The first is the short answer and the second is the real answer. the war didnt just break out. it had been going on for twenty years before the U.S. decided to get involved. I hope i was able to help. if you need any help in the future please contact me and i will be glad to help. my goal is to educate, not to do someone else's homework. I've got my own homework to do ;)
