My Opinion of the Play Lately I've been obsessed with the musical Heathers. It's all I can think about, but honestly how could it not be? The story is like a million all in one. At the beginning I felt like I was re-watching Mean Girls, but it turned into something much more meaningful. It turned into a story about four fake suicides, three of which were murder, two attempted suicides, one suicide, and an attempt of mass murder. People tell me I'm a good poet because I can say so much using so little, but the true champion is Kevin Murphy and Laurence O'Keefe. How they wrote a musical with so much depth, I will never know, but only hope to learn. The musical is based off of the 80's movie Heathers, and quite personally I found the movie rather awful. You can find it on Netflix or even on YouTube. I still can't believe the transformation it had when it went from movie to play. I felt so much more connected to Veronica, and the love static that came from her and JD. It was indescribable. It's the kind of love you dream of...minus the mass murders, of course. I don't know whether it was "Dead Girl Walking", or "Our Love is God" that really pulled my attention towards their relationship; either way you could see how much they loved each other as they song "Seventeen". It was beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. Besides all the musical numbers, and the intensity of the play, you couldn't help but to notice all the humor; no matter how dark it was. I think my favorite line is from the opening song "Beautiful". The line is spoken with music by Veronica, "Kurt Kelly, he is the smartest guy on the football team! Which is kind of like being the tallest dorf." The moment I heard that, I couldn't help but to start dying out in laughter. By the end of the musical I felt like it had ended too soon and yet this line seemed ages ago, yet ever so memorable. So now I'm listening to the music on repeat and have seen the play on YouTube for the 1,000th time, and I still can't get rid of this feeling. You can only watch something for the first time once, but every time I hear or watch it, I am drawn in just as much. I think it's more than Love or murder; I think the reason why I love Heathers so much is because it's all about high school life. When she said that her school wasn't school it was "The Thunder Dome" I could relate. It may be a little over drawn because it's a musical but even the parts that are unrealistic you can't help but to find the symbolism behind it. JD may have been crazy and a bit of an extremist but he wasn't entirely wrong. The things he said made sense. His ways of handling things is where his down fall happened. I love this musical, I think that's pretty apparent. I would suggest anyone to watch this...except for children. That would be a bad idea, but other than that I feel as if anyone should watch it and fall in love as much as I did. Explaining the Play From the View of Veronica Veronica is probably my favorite character and when I say that I'm not talking about my favorite character in Heathers, I'm talking about my all-time favorite character. I love how in a way she guyish, but even more so I love her awkwardness. It's what gives her the humor in which she carries, but it's not like the audience is laughing at her, we're laughing with her. Veronica is obviously the main character. She begins as an awkward nerd who is transformed into one of the popular "Heathers". She is transformed after she helps the "Heathers" out of detention by making a fake hall pass. Veronica is extremal smart and very good at forging other people's handwriting. Veronica sees this as an opportunity to get in with the "Heathers", so Veronica turns from a loser, to a somebody, in a matter of minutes as the "heathers" give her a sexy make over. This is one of the many reasons why I love the musical better than the movie. The musical begins before Veronica's transformation, while the movie starts with Veronica as already a "heather". I love the small one song lasting backstory; I felt like this gave me a closer connection into who Veronica Sawyer really is. Really this helped with the characterization in a lot of characters. Now while Veronica was good at heart being popular seemed like a better road to travel than being "nice". This is why, her soon to be boyfriend begins to like her. They started flirting and he saw that while she hung with the featheres of the school, she still had some good in her. Eventually Veronica was outed by the "Heathers" due to this goodness. She couldn't do the awful crap in which the heathers wanted her to do. When this happened Veronica had basically committed social suicide. So what's the logical thing to do in this situation? Sleep with the guy you like. Very aggressively Veronica runs over to her soon boyfriend, JD, while singing the song Dead girl walking. By the end of the song they are basically having sex on stage. That's also the moment when they became a couple. This is probably my favorite scene, and before you start jumping to conclusions, no I'm not a pervert. I love this scene because of the intensity, and the connection between the two. Also I love the funny one liners in this song like, "I've decided I must ride you until I break you", or when she says, "I'm hot, pissed, and on the pill". Props to Veronica for being so direct. The next morning Veronica wakes up after an awful nightmare about the "heathers" ruining her, so she makes the decision to go and make amends. As much as she hated the "heathers" she knew that they controlled the school. JD decides to go with Veronica to one of the "heathers" house. While joking around about giving her some cleaning supplies rather than the hang over drink that was intended, Veronica accidently gives Heather Chandler the wrong cup. Long story short Veronica and JD had killed Heather. While this being an accident, they also knew that the police wouldn't see it that way, so Veronica decides to use her forgery skills by making a fake suicide note. This scene is funnier than it might sound because as awful as what had just happened, Veronica can't help but to keep making jokes. Eventually she gets her head on straight and begins singing the song "The Me Inside of Me"
