will give medal can someone factor y= -x^2-2x+8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would use the FOIL method

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well you can rewrite it as \[y = -(x^2 + 2x - 8)\] so now find the factors of -8 that add to 2... the larger factor is positive and the smaller is negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@campbell_st will 4 be positive

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

it will so the other factor is ..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nvm its no good i know its not 4+(-2)

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

its 4 x -2 = -8 4 + -2 = 2 so it factors to y = -(x + 4)(x - 2)

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

it can be written y = (2 - x)(x + 4) which is another version of the factored form

thanks for helping
