Break it down in to simple steps. Don't think about all the requirements of the essay. Don't start by choosing patriot or betrayer. Leave that for later. Start by making a list. What do you know about Brutus in Act III. Just list fact or description or quote you can think of. Go back to the text and reread to see if there is any thing you left off your list. Then go through your list. For each thing on your list. Put a P for patriot or B for betrayer next to each item (or use different color highlighters or stars and checks or whatever. The idea is to start dividing your evidence into useful categories. It's OK if an item is in more than one category. And it's OK if you find that some facts don't go easily into either. Look at your list. Count up the Ps and Bs. It maybe helpful to rewrite the list into columns. Now you can start thinking about the Patriot vs. Betrayer question. Which has the most evidence? Maybe you decide one piece of evidence out weighs 3 pieces in the other column. There is no right or wrong. The question asked for you to decide. So you get to decide. When you think you know which way you are going to label him, start grouping the facts together that support that idea. Maybe all the things he says in one group. And all the actions in another. Try to come up with 3 groups if this is supposed to be any essay. It's OK to change your mind if it doesn't seem right. Look at your groups. Each is a paragraph. It's best to write them in order of weakest evidence to best evidence. But the main thing you want to do is to write a sentence for each idea in the group. You may combine a couple ideas in one sentence or need to write more than one for an idea. When you have those paragraphs. Put them in the order you think works best. Again its best to write weakest evidence first and finish with strongest. But make it make sense to you. Then write your introduction. Brutus is a betrayer (or patriot). Write a couple of sentences that generally give the reasons why without details. Add your paragraphs. And do a last short summary with maybe a personal observation like I'm glad I don't have friends like that. If it requires a shorter answer without developed paragraphs. Skip those steps but do the same kind of thing.

Make the list first. See if you can make a stronger case for one or the other. Teachers get papers from students all the time from students who can't decide one way or the other. Those essays are wishy washy and don't get very good grades. Make a decision one way or the other. And then defend it. Give it your best shot like you are confident that you are right. Don't mention your doubts. For this kind of assignment mentioning negatives will weaken your writing and turn it to mush. You don't have to ultimately agree with the decision you write about. You may later change you mind. That doesn't matter. If you have to rope a calf in a herd, you don't just throw your rope at the herd and hope to catch one. You pick one out and focus all your actions on roping that one. It's the same in writing this type of essay. Show that your are confident and that you know what your are taking about.(Even if you're unsure about it.) Don't let the calf think your afraid. Or the teacher.
