Question regarding a specific element of a biology question on (meiosis?) chromosomes and cells

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

"If each of the cells shown in the diagram has 16 chromosomes, how many chromosomes would you expect to find in a skin cell of the resulting organism?" The answer is 32. Could you explain why? It makes sense in sexual reproduction, but in this case I don't see how skin has anything to do with meiosis (I thought mitosis?).

OpenStudy (aaronq):

what kind of cells are shown in the diagram? maybe those were gametes themselves, in which case they would be haploid - thus half of the chromosomes in a somatic cell.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

A gamete cell was shown, looks a bit like a sperm cell.
