Help! Will medal! What type of polynomial is X(X-X)(X-X)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here are the exact numbers X(X-4)(X-5)

OpenStudy (welshfella):

what do you think the highest exponent of x is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because when none are shown it is 1

OpenStudy (welshfella):

X * X * X = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh so thias is a trinomial?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this* @welshfella

OpenStudy (welshfella):

well in UK we would call it a cubic polynomial but it has 3 terms in it so it might be a trinomial in the US

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes! So what degree would it be?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

it expands to x^3 - 9x^2 + 20x

OpenStudy (welshfella):

the degree is 3

OpenStudy (welshfella):

because of the x^3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because 3 is the biggest exponent right?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Awesome I thank you, I may need help in a little bit and will tag you if that is alright.

OpenStudy (welshfella):

i'll be here for about another half hour

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@welshfella do you have time for another question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@gorv

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Factor 3x2y2 - 2xy2 - 8y2. Show your work

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x^2y^2-2xy^2-8y^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please im running out of time

OpenStudy (welshfella):

you need to find the gcf of the 3 terms thats the greatest term which will divide exactrly into each of the 3 terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think -2

OpenStudy (welshfella):

the numbers 2 3 and 8 have no gcf the only thing common to all 3 is y^2 so that is your gcf

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Y^2(3x^2-2x-8)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

so take y^2 out and it becomes y^2( 3x^2 yes u r right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you factor it for me from there? And show the steps

OpenStudy (welshfella):

hold on 3x^2 - 2x - 8 may also factor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think (3x+4)(x-2)

OpenStudy (welshfella):

3x^2 - 2x - 8 3 * -8 = -24 so try -6 and + 4 =3x^2 -6x + 4x - 8 = 3x(x - 2)+ 4(x - 2) = (3x+ 4)( x - 2)

OpenStudy (welshfella):

so finall we get y^2(3x + 4)(x - 2)

OpenStudy (welshfella):

gotta go right now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok thank you so much for your help and time

OpenStudy (welshfella):
