could someone please help me for a medal and fan ? Which is an example of the opposite of a sum property? A. –17 + 32 = 32 + (–17) B. –26 + (4 + 8) = (–26 + 4) + 8 C. –5(6 + 3) = –5(6) + –5(3) D. –(–17 + 5) = 17 + (–5)

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Any ideas what the property means?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tbh i have no idea what any of this means

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Honesty is good :-) The opposite of a sum can be symbolized as - ( a + b ) Does that^ make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i thought c

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

C is the distributive property

OpenStudy (anonymous):

am i correct

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Nope.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how about b

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Look at my symbolization: - ( a + b ) a + b is a sum, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

The lowered minus sign " - " in front means "the opposite of".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so a

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

- ( -17 + 5 ) means the opposite of the sum -17 + 5, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

So that is the opposite of a sum, which is what the question is asking for :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so d thanks so mcuh!
