Basic Chem questions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are the bases on the interior or the exterior of the double helix? Are they randomly arranged or neatly stacked? Are the sugar groups on the interior or the exterior of the DNA molecule?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They should be on the interior.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Both of them? Can you clarify a bit more? I don't understand.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And you'd do better in bio

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This isn't for chemistry which means you'd get less answers.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

look at the picture

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think they are neatly stacked, I may be wrong though. And it seems interior. sugar are the exterior? I'm just studying this so my bad. I'm not really educated with the terms so it's the reason why I ask and seek validation. @aaronq

OpenStudy (aaronq):

no problem. getting reassurance about the positions is critical when you wanna understand further processes. so yes, the bases are neatly stacked like "dinner plates" (because of \(\pi \rightarrow \pi\) interactions between adjacent base pairs -not the complementary) and are in the interior, the sugars and the phosphates are the exterior - hence they are the backbone.

@aaronq Thanks so much ^_^ Thanks for the clarification. I'll give you a medal :)

OpenStudy (aaronq):

no problem! glad i could help
