Write the equation of the line passing through the points (0, -4) and (-2, 2).
can you find the slope of the line..?
3
Well, there are two options for writing the equation of the line: point-slope form or slope-intercept form. Given that you only know the coordinates of two points, not the y-intercept, the answer should probably be in slope-intercept form
is that a guess..?
no i meant -3
The formula for slope is change in y coordinates over change in x coordinates @Blondebeauty
So is my answer for the slope wrong?
So find the slope: 2-0/-2-4= 2/-6
Yes it is wrong :( The slope is actually 2/-6
y2 - y1 / x2 - x1 so 2 -(-4) / -2 - 0 6 / -2
well that makes more sense.. you are given the point where the line cuts the y-axis (0,4) so the y intercept is y = -4 the slope intercept form of the line is y = mx + b m = slope, b = y-intercept... just substitute your information for the equation
oops sorry @Blondebeauty I had a typo, I meant 2-(-4)/-2-0, so the slope is actually 6/-2
That is correct
So now that you now the slope, like @campbell_st say, substitute that into the equation
so would it be y=6/-2x+(-4)?
know*
oh, and the slope is correct... |dw:1431027837950:dw|
