For this assessment you will: 1. examine the animals and plants that live around your home or in a local park 2. choose one kind of plant or animal that lives there 3. identify the specific species name of the plant or animal that you chose 4. choose five factors that might limit the size of population of this species 5. identify each of your five limiting factors as a biotic or abiotic factor You will record this information in the assignment worksheet.

@TobleroneJesus

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so pick an animal where you live. maybe your state animal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, so umm.. my state animal is a panther :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, i dont know much about panthers. but use some trait of theirs that may make them less likely to survive. here is an article about panthers. http://www.bigcat.com/newsite/infopanther.aspx next, label them as biotic or abiotic. http://www2.ccsd.ws/sbfaculty/team8e/jecole/Science/abiotic_vs_.htm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what other animal can i do that you know more about?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lets go step by step :) so starting with step 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know allot about lizards. some live in my yard so i get to see them and take a closer look of their traits. they look like this http://www.fotothing.com/photos/f10/f103e4b0861f02e6aa652e2038b1b666.jpg so step one, look up Western Fence Lizard and look at their details and futures. . (those live in my yard, and are common where in live, California.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have lizards in my backyard too!! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what do i do now and how do I start filling out the woreksheet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so examine their abilities. They run really fast, the colors that they can have (mine are usually brown), and can climb up a fence and houses. Also fun fact, they can grow back their tail. Now find some traits that they have that can limit their ability to survive. for example they are cold blooded. If the weather changes fast on them (for example from hot to cold) they can die easier in the cold. (lizards like to life in hotter climates)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait, so whats the first thing i have to fill in my worksheet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Write down the species name. we are using the Western Fence Lizard.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but is there western fence lizards in any other state or just california because i dont live in california

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The Eastern Fence Lizard. It is almost the same thing. i have only seen pictures of them, so i dont know if they act like the western ones or not, they are probally pretty much the same. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_fence_lizard On the first column write the trait you think can limit their ability to live in the eco system. the second is to write if it is biotic or abiotic. Biotic means its a living factor and abiotic means it is a nonliving factor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok yea we can do the eastern fence lizard better :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what do i write on the first column

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay. so the first column, do you know what traits can make them less likely to survive a situation. Like cold weather, or a hurricane, etc that naturally happens in the eco system. Lizards dont like cold weather, because they are cold blooded. if the weather changes fast, they cant adapt to it easy. Right now it is really hot in California, so they are out more. a few days ago it got cold all of a sudden and one died. (true story) They start to move slow and freeze up and eventually die. so their cold blood makes them less likely to survive a cold storm like rain or snow.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what can i write exactly in sentences?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and dont make the sentences too long :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First column: Cold blooded Second column: Abiotic trait [it isnt a living thing] Third: They can less likely survive out in cold weather.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so like this..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i did it.. second column??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

write tat it is an abiotic trait. Cold blooded is not a living thing in the ecosystem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait.. how?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is what i have so far :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats what i have so far :) now lets do the second row

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes that is good. How many do you have to do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5 more rows :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lets do the second row now :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so its a little hard to find traits that can limit them. But, they like to hangout on rocks, fences, and high places that are visible to see (mine like to stand on the paths and the big rocks.) so it makes them easy to be seen and caught by birds and other predators.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so lets do the second row :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so the trait is called sunning. they just stand out in the middle or a easy place to be seen. its like when pet lizards lay under a sun lamp. First section: Sunning (standing out in the sun) Second: abiotic Third: They can be easily seen by predators.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

great! i typed it :) now third row!! almost done :))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay they also can develop/have Lyme disease easy. First one: Prone to Lyme disease Second: biotic Third: ticks feed on their blood and can cause them to be weaker than usual and feel limb.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i typed it! fourth row??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First one: Short legs Second: abiotic Third: Can cause them to run slower than usual and can be killed by fire ants easier.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok done with that one!! Last oneeeee...yay ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i am reading about them so it may take a little. this is also good for me because i am learning about the lizards that live in my yard too lol.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol thats awesome!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did u figure it out yet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so some of them have spikey scales and some dont so: First: Smooth scales Second: abiotic Third: It can make it harder for them to fight off predators

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the spikes help them keep predators from biting them or attacking them because it can poke and hurt the predators

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank you so very much... without you i probably wouldve gotten like a c :/ lol but now that you helped me i couldnt thank you enough.. ur the best and u definetly deserve a medal : ) <3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are welcome. :) thank you because i know allot about these lizards, they are all over my yard and they confuse me because my dog wants to catch them. hey will you do me a favor and get me to 50 smart coins? if you dont want to its okay.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do i get you to 50 smart coins?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

by giving me medals on my answers on questions that i have answered but didnt get a medal. i need 4 more medals just go to my profile click on answered questions and click best answer on my name you can only do it for just four of them, that can make up for all the rows for this assignment Thank you :) also let me know how you did!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok... np! and can you help me on just one more assignment please :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure! i might have to go soon though.
