A primary reason for Truman's decision to drop the atomic bombs on Japan was that he thought that it would lead to less deaths than a land invasion thought that Japan was developing nuclear weapons feared a Soviet and Japanese alliance wanted to retaliate for the Pearl Harbor attack

Soviets would never ally with Japan. The closest they've ever gotten to was a peace treaty so Japan could focus on Asian dominance and the USSR could focus on the German Invasion.

The USA calculated that if they invaded by land, it would take over 1,000,000 american soldier deaths.
