A lot of the adults keep going to protect their kids.

Did you read the topics to consider? They would probably help. The children are more oblivious to what's going on. Some of the adults continue on because they're thinking about they're family. They know they can't give up because they are needed and this may end one day. I actually cried when I read that book.

The author focused on the more sad and heartbreaking parts of what he experienced and didn't point out any positive motives...and yes, the kids are more oblivious. However, I have an objection with im_no_smarty_pants's reasoning with one part."They know they can't give up because they are needed and this may end one day" I don't recall ever reading that anywhere. The people in the camps, in the end, gave up on life and waited for their deaths. They had hope for a short time when they heard of news from the war, but then they just wanted their lives to end quickly to forget all of the horrors they have seen. That's just my opinion, but the adults didn't act so differently from the children in the end. Both adult and children alike gave up on living and awaited their deaths by Nazi hands. I remembered that one of the prisoners mentioned that the Nazis will keep their word and kill off every last Jew before they could have a chance to be liberated. He trusted the Nazi's words more than God. That man was an adult...and Elie was young at the time, and he felt the same way as that man.
