Jamestown and the Powhatan Jamestown, Virginia, was founded in 1607. It was the first successful English colony in the New World. Throughout much of its history, Jamestown’s settlers had a tense relationship with the nearby Powhatan, a Native American group. Because the settlers were unable to grow enough food for themselves, they needed to trade with the Powhatan for corn. This was difficult because the people of Jamestown and the Powhatan were not friendly with each other, and each group often attacked the other. The Powhatan decided to stop trading corn in 1609, causing many of Jamestown’s settlers to starve to death. In 1610, the settlers raided Powhatan villages, burning their houses and cornfields. In 1622, the Powhatan attacked the settlers, killing women and children and trying to drive the colonists out of Jamestown completely. Jamestown continued to grow, however, with new colonists and supplies from England. The Powhatan were defeated by the colonists again in 1644, after which they were no longer a real threat. 2. According to the passage, what most threatened the Jamestown settlers, other than the Powhatan Native Americans? nearby Spanish colonies starvation from lack of food hurricanes from the coast other Native American tribes
