start by subtracting 1 from each part of the inequality... what do you get..?

I got negative 2 on one side and +2 on the other

well that is solving for x, which is what you need to do -2 < x < 2 so any value of x between -2 and 2 makes the original inequality true. you can test by letting x = 0... that is between -2 and 2 so substitute it into the original inequality is -3 < 2*0 + 1 < 3 ? or is -3 < 1 < 3 if so you ahve the correct solution.
