Find the rate of change for the linear function represented in the table Hours worked 1 2 3 4 Money Earned ($) 5.50 11.00 16.50 22.00 Please help I am confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know how to find the slope of a line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no it confuses me sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok well rate of change is just another name for slope. Before we do that we need to use the table to choose points.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The hours worked is x. money earned is y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For example (1, 5,5) is one point of the function. Can you use the table to pick out another?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So sorry my computer locked up for a min I had to reboot it all. 2, 11,0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

np

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is the slope equation \[m=\frac{ y _{2}-y _{1} }{ x _{2}-x _{1}}\] We're going to use the points (1, 5.5) and (2, 11) to find the slope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If point 1 is (1, 5.5) and point 2 is (2, 11) we can fill in the values like this \[m = \frac{ 11-5.5 }{ 2-1 }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So how would you simplify that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5.5/1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right, and that's just 5.5. rate of change = 5.5

Thank you very much for your help. I appreciate it very much
