Solve (8x + 3)^2 = 16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first lets break this up so we can use the FOIL method. Do you know how to do that?

OpenStudy (bananas1234):

Kinda, but not very well

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well lets break up the left side first. show me what another way to represent that squared.

OpenStudy (bananas1234):

8x^3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not quite. we can rewrite this as (8x+3)(8x+3) = 16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OR!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If we take the square root of both sides then we get (8x+3)= 4 That equation is much more simple to solve.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

remember the square root undoes a square and vise versa.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does that all make sense? If so, great! If not, let me know where you're stuck. If you do understand, post your answer and i will check your work!

OpenStudy (bananas1234):

-7/8, 1/8?

OpenStudy (bananas1234):

@agentc0re
