OpenStudy (nathalyn):

Explain what happened in each of the two demonstrations, and then compare them. Use the terms resistance, vacuum, gravity, velocity, and friction.

OpenStudy (nathalyn):

give me a sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (nathalyn):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They look exactly the same...

OpenStudy (nathalyn):

in the second there is air can you see

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no lol but question what is this assignment called

OpenStudy (nathalyn):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like is it a 1.02 biology something like that

OpenStudy (nathalyn):

Friction Assignment

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nothing else the makes it specific?

OpenStudy (nathalyn):

Look at the images below. The tubes are filled with regular air, like the air we breathe. When you click "Release," the marble and the cotton ball will fall in the two tubes. Which do you think will fall faster? this is for the first pic

OpenStudy (nathalyn):

this for the second pic Now look at these images. These tubes have been sealed off, and the air has been sucked out with special lab equipment. This creates a vacuum. The space in the tubes has no matter in it at all--it has none of the gases that are found in regular air. Clicking "Release" will again release a marble and a cotton ball. Which do you think will fall faster now?

OpenStudy (nathalyn):

do you get it/??????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No im sorry this one your gonna have to do on your own. :/

OpenStudy (nathalyn):

okay np

OpenStudy (nathalyn):

okay that is all then ttyl

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bye

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jagr2713 do you think you can help here?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For the first case:: Resistance :: when you release the ball, the air in the tube is untouched. so, it makes an resistance force caused by friction when you try to get through it. so, the friction will try to decrease the speed of the object. Friction:: but as you can see, irrespective of masses, the surface area of two objects is same, so the friction mainly dependent on surface area exphosed. and it is same for two objects. Gravity :: it is same for the both masses, (if you got same masses) Velocy:: again it varies according to mass, as the mass increases the falling velocity increases by time. and approximately it reaches a maximum falling velocity where it wont increase furthure even inchange of height/time.(thats another topc) Vsacuum:: there is no vacuum. For the case 2:: Vacuum:: since there is vacuum, but not specific. and we take it as maximum. friction:: since there is no air (sucked by vacuum) there will be no external obstacling force . so no friction . it will be like a freely falling body in space. resistance:: since no friction, no resistance. gravity :: it is same for the both masses, (if you got same masses) Velocity ::again, again it varies according to mass, as the mass increases the falling velocity increases by time. and approximately it reaches a maximum falling velocity where it wont increase furthure even inchange of height/time.(thats another topc) so, finally, in case 1:: the marble touches the bottom first. Reason:: friction helps the cotton ball fall slow. in the second case :: the cotton ball touches first/or/they both fall same.(depends upon vacuum specificity) Reason:: the vacuum helps the cotton ball.
