MEDAL!! A $45 chair has been reduced to$36. What percent discount is this?

What is the AMOUNT of the discount?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

First find the amount of the discount. This is the part. Then divide the part by the total original price and multiply by 100 to find the percent.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Yes, the part is 9. Now you are trying to find what percent of 45 is 9. Since 9 is the part, divide the part (9) by the whole (45) and multiply by 100.

50% means half. Half of 45 is 22.5 9 has to be much less than 50%.

Correct. 20% is correct. Check: What is 20% of 45? 20% of 45 = 20% * 45 = 0.2 * 45 = 9, and 9 was the discount. Also notice that 9 is one-fifth of 45, and 0.2 and 20% are other ways of representing 1/5.
