How did the media shape public perception of the Vietnam War? Reporters frequently attacked Johnson over his administration's failed policies. For the first time, people saw up-to-date news coverage of war on television. Newspapers refused to cover events that might show the war in a negative light. Protestors published magazines and appeared on television to explain their message.

Initially the media was pro-US involvement both in the US and even with reporters in Indochina. From around 1956 onwards the media in Vietnam and other parts of Indochina started writing negative stories but these reports were edited back in the US to be positive stories. It was not until 1968 that the media within the US started printing accurate unedited stories from Indochina.
