OpenStudy (yadu123):

Mark's physics book is on the desk. Mark pushes horizontally (from the side) on the book, but the book does not move.

OpenStudy (yadu123):

its either diagram b or c

Mehek (mehek14):

from b and c which picture shows the same length for all the arrows

Mehek (mehek14):

@yadu123 ?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The book is sitting on the table and is not going up or down. That means vertical forces are in equilibrium. Since the book has mass, and therefore some weight, there must be a force down that is balanced by a force up. in diagram D, the down force is greater than the up force. Then book in D will accelerate in the down direction. Eliminate D.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Now you have diagrams A, B, and C left. In diagram A, there are no horizontal forces applied. That contradicts the statement of the problem. In diagram B, the horizontal forces are in equilibrium. The book does not move horizontally. In diagram C, the force pushing to the right is greater than the force pushing to the left. This book will accelerate to the right. Which diagram, A, B, or C shows the situation in the statement of the problem?
