Three vertices of a rectangle are given. Find the coordinates of the fourth vertex. (–2, 4), (4, 0), (2, –3) A. (–4, –1) B. (–4, 0) C. (–4, 1) D. (–4, 2)

@just_one_last_goodbye

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Are you working on analytic geometry or transformations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Oh well, how do you intend to solve the problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk

OpenStudy (mathmate):

What are you currently learning in math?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Ok, your teacher gave you this problem at one point in time. So what did you learn before that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmmmm i cant remember what it is called

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@iGreen

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Have you learned about lines, points, parallel lines? Have you learned about properties of a rectangle? Have you learned about rotations, reflections, translations? Tell me any and everything you have learned from the above.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya that is what it is called the first one

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Ok, that's analytic geometry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Do you know the properties of a rectangle? Like - opposite sides parallel - adjacent sides perpendicular ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think the anser is c

OpenStudy (mathmate):

What make you think it's C?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i try to get the 4th vortex

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and that is what i got

OpenStudy (mathmate):

How did you find it to be C, and not A, B, or D?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk this is just what i got

OpenStudy (mathmate):

guess?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i dident guess

OpenStudy (mathmate):

|dw:1433167776197:dw|

OpenStudy (mathmate):

One way to solve it is by graphing it (see above) Another way is to calculate the coordinates using analytic geometry, that might take 4-6 minutes. The third way is to use a 180 rotation about the centre of the rectangle, that takes about 20 seconds.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did and got c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am ganna check

OpenStudy (anonymous):

by looking it up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

brb

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Good, (-4,1) is correct. Please use the answer instead of the letter preceding the answer to avoid miscommunication.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya just looked it up thx

OpenStudy (mathmate):

You're welcome! :)
