Algal are simple usually single celled plants that live almost anywhere there is water, sunshine and mineral nutrients. The number of algal that will normally be found in any environment is usually limited by the amount of sunlight and nutrients available. When extra nutrients or sunlight become available the algae will multiply and you have an algal bloom. Algal blooms occur naturally in some oceans, notably the polar oceans which bloom in the summer and the East coast of America which experiences upwelling of water from the deep oceans that is rich in carbon dioxide and nutrients. Naturally occurring algal blooms are a source of food for plankton and ultimately provide food for fish. There is also such a thing as a man made algal bloom that is usually caused by runoff from fields that contain nitrogen fertilizer. Runoff can cause algal blooms is rivers, reservoirs and ultimately in the oceans. Unlike naturally occurring algal blooms man made algal blooms occur very rapidly and the algae rapidly deplete the water of nutrients, die and decay. The decay process removes oxygen from the water resulting in a sterile environment @NathalyN

n greater detail than described in the lesson, what is an algal bloom and how does it occur? (10 points) What is a red tide, and how does it relate to algal blooms? (10 points) If algae are natural organisms, why is it "bad" for the environment when they enjoy an increase in population? What is unnatural (related to humans) about an algal bloom? (10 points) Describe some possible solutions that scientists are working on to reduce the harmful effects of algal blooms. (10 points)

2.) What is a red tide, and how does it relate to algal blooms? The harmful algal bloom(accumulation of algae in aquatic systems) caused by the dinoflagellate species(photosynthetic protests which are commonly regarded as algae) are termed as red tides. They are known as red tides as this produce a reddish or brown color to the water. This is seen in marine coastal areas. @NathalyN

3.) If algae are natural organisms, why is it "bad" for the environment when they enjoy an increase in population? What is unnatural (related to humans) about an algal bloom? They are natural organisms like any other but you should bare in mind the equilibrium in ecosystem. In plain english, algae live and consume the oxygen of the aquatic environment cosing dissolved oxygen (DO) to drop, as the result fishes die. The increase of nutrients in the aquatic environment, which coses algal blooms to expand, is called - eutrophication. @NathalyN

OpenStudy (barreraa):

4.) Describe some possible solutions that scientists are working on to reduce the harmful effects of algal blooms. The easiest way to control it is to change the way we grow things. limit the chemical fertilizers. And eliminate phosphorus for lawns. If I had my way, ALL chemical fertilizers for lawns should go. They are mere vanity crops, not necessary for living, and added together account for the largest single "crop" in the U.S., and account for WAY WAY more chemicals per acre than any commercial farming in the country. @NathalyN

OpenStudy (nathalyn):

how abut the first one @barreraA

OpenStudy (barreraa):

its the one at the top @NathalyN

OpenStudy (nathalyn):

oh okay thanks!!! sorry
