It's a procedure. It's not a mystery. :-) 1) Calculate the mean. 2) Calculate the deviation from the mean for each observation. 3) Find the absolute values of the deviations. 4) Add up all the absolute deviations. 5) Divide by the number of observations. Done.

I did 2+10+16+21+27+38=114 divided by 6=19
